In support of those who have suffered the effects of trauma

In support of those who have suffered the effects of trauma

We would like to offer Transcendental Meditation to those who suffer the effects of trauma. Studies show potential effectiveness of TM for alleviating symptoms of PTSD. This occurs through the provision of deep rest during meditation which neutralizes accumulated stress in the physiology.
It is then with great joy that we would like to invite TM meditators, other types of meditation practitioners and anyone interested in meditation to join us in a fundraising night to help us achieve our mission.
The night will start with the opportunity to take part in a big group meditation. Not only do this meditations have a profound effect on the individual, but they also create brainwave coherence in the surrounding environment which contributes to create more peace and harmony. Those who currently don’t have a meditation practice will be instructed in a simple mindfulness technique.
Following that, the lovely Celia Delaney will be taking the stage to host a night full of thrilling live performances by Hannah Rees, Anita Kelleher and Nisha Hallai. From Bollywood vibes to participatory singing there will be plenty of smiles on your faces.
Thanks to our sponsors there will be a raffle draw with some pretty amazing prizes, including:
– A one hour Abhyanga Marma massage offered by The Ayurvedic Clinic
– Oil Paintings by Jo Kay
– A one hour “Brand You” session with John Purkiss
– cinema tickets, restaurant vouchers, classes and many many more.
Tickets are only £15 and include a raffle ticket worth £2.50. More raffle tickets will be available to buy during the event. Raffle tickets can also be purchased online if you can’t attend and still would like to get a change at winning our amazing prices. Small amounts of the drug penetrate into breast milk, so Ambien is not recommended for use during breastfeeding. There is more information on the website LarryDosseymd.com.
Did we mention the delicious vegetarian food we will be providing?
You really have no excuse!

Thank you very much for your comments, we appreciate being given the opportunity to explain the background and motivation behind our project. You are absolutely right that there are 'masses of issues out there'. The effects of trauma is an issue that we are particularly inspired to work with. One of our TM teachers, Dr Gemma Beckley, is particularly interested in mental health given her background as a Clinical Psychologist. She started this project about a year ago (due to other developments in the Trust this project was delayed) and she was not aware at the time of any other organisation focusing on PTSD. She had previously conducted research on the effects of TM practice on symptoms of anxiety and depression, but a number of factors moved her to want to progress onto PTSD: In her Clinical work she had been moved by the stories of clients suffering from PTSD and the impact it is having on their lives, not just soldiers returning from war zones, but civilians who have experienced other traumas such as childhood sexual abuse. One war veteran described his symptoms as 'its like there's something inside me...I need to get it out' - this reflects our understanding in TM of it being a physical Samskara - impression left in the nervous system. We have seen, both in preliminary research and the testimonials of a number of our meditators, the effect that TM can have in dissolving this stress, allowing the body to start healing itself and the reduction in symptoms and progress in recovery that can occur as a result. Many people are aware of the growing problem we have here in the UK, as around the world, in the increase in PTSD diagnoses due to soldiers returning from war. This is putting increasing pressure on our National Health Service to treat not only these, but the already long waiting lists of civilians seeking treatment for trauma related symptoms. There is a continued search for effective treatments for PTSD, and people who have experienced trauma are not always keen to engage in talking therapies. One to one therapy sessions over many months is also very costly and time consuming for services. To be aware of both the problem and the solution but not to be able to implement due to the lack of a large and rigorous research evidence base is frustrating. People are suffering unnecessarily. I believe that the focus in the DLF, both in teaching TM and in new research, is on the military, and is most active in the USA. To have UK based research is important. But additionally it is important for us to teach, research, and raise awareness for, those suffering from trauma related symptoms in the civilian populations. In reference again to the 'masses of issues out there', trauma is hidden behind a number of other diagnoses including ADHD, personality disorders, anxiety and substance misuse. Trauma comes in the form of childhood abuse (physical, sexual and emotional), crime (including rape), environmental disasters, and even series of 'small t' traumas which, built up over time can trigger trauma related symptoms. The latter can go un-diagnosed because it is less obvious than having experienced one massive trauma in combat. Trauma is key underlying factor for many populations including the homeless, children in the 'care' system and those in prison. And it is a problem for employers where symptoms cause work absence, particularly in occupations such as the emergency services, police and train drivers. Both our teaching and research aims to be inclusive of wider populations with PTSD diagnoses or trauma related symptoms. If you have any particular issues which you think we should be exploring, please feel free to make specific suggestions and we would certainly look into them within the limitations of our resources! I hope this answers your question, and that you can now join in our enthusiasm for this project!

Why PSTD? There are masses of issues out there where TM could be of benefit, and several of us are looking into these and the current research being undertaken in the mainstream with mainstream applications beyond PSTD........this is a copy of the D Lynch cause. I just dont get why the Meditation Trust is doing the same? Some creativity and application guys? I was excited to find some organisation charging less than the movement....but I'm not excited to find this.
