How to Rediscover Spontaneous Happiness…
…and a great deal more that results from it!
Do you remember your early childhood, when you were naturally happy and carefree – at least for a while – for no apparent reason? And a few people have experienced something far more than just everyday happiness; a spontaneously emerging inner bliss so profound and fulfilling that it created a deep peace, freedom, fulfilment and self-confidence that has never diminished.
On the other hand, even most of those who have had that experience have still not managed to maintain much more than just a memory of it into adulthood under society’s pressures.
Losing it
Society, in its ignorance, trains spontaneous happiness out of us by failing to give us any idea of this underlying reality of life, who we really are, apart from the hints sometimes provided by religion. Instead it urges us on to the treadmill of economic growth without any justification except financial well-being, and without any resilience to the stress created by our struggling in life whilst unaware of our blissful inner Self.
In a barrage of media propaganda, industry and institutions try to persuade us that happiness is to be found in their products and experiences. In reality, the pleasure these provide will only enable us to forget our lack of fulfilment and feel temporarily ‘happy’. As the pleasure inevitably fades with time, we experience a renewed need for more of the products and experiences, thus sowing the seeds of addiction.
The Solution
The problem is not with the marketers of products and experiences or with other people, but lies in our weakness, having forgotten our own inner, spiritual strength, the real and only source of all our happiness which consequently, when noticed, seems to come from events, people and possessions.
The solution, ancient Greek philosophers told us, is “Know Yourself”, and the way is transcendence.
The solution, ancient Greek philosophers told us, is “Know Yourself”, and the way is transcendence. Rediscover our real self, the silent blissful Self, the source of happiness, love, energy, creativity, peace, and all good things in life, described by the meditation teachers of the Yoga tradition as sat chit ananda (eternal bliss-consciousness) and more recently by Jesus as ‘the kingdom of heaven within you’ (not a religious statement, but scientific fact). The result is that life gets easier, healthier, more inspiring and rewarding in every possible way, as we don’t look for happiness from our experiences but express our pre-existing happiness through our experiences. (So ultimately no more possibility of addiction).

Transcendental meditation is a natural technique in which, with no effort or control, the mind flows effortlessly beyond the ‘present moment’ of mindfulness towards silence, like a river towards the ocean.
